When Upper St. Clair decided to upgrade their current Fire Station, we were commissioned to compare renovation cost to new construction. Based on life expectancy and a number of other factors, a new station was more economical when amortized over the next 30 years. By building the new facility in the current parking area, we were able to assure the community the fire department would “stay in business” during the entire process, so we “flipped the site” – meaning we moved all trucks and equipment into the new building once completed, and created new parking where the old building stood. Response time was never compromised.
In addition to providing offices for administration of this self-sustaining fire department, the new facility hosts 6 truck bays, conference and training space, a bunk room, a kitchen and a generator to maintain basic operational services during a crisis or emergency.
The sidewalks and driveway are heated from below with a radiant heat system to eliminate dependency on township staff for snow removal thus saving response time and maintenance costs.
Located at the portal to Upper St. Clair township, the building serves to create a professional and upscale image for the community.
